Brendan Clarke-Smith - Remote Learning and Free School Meals Opposition Debate

Tuesday, 19 January, 2021

Yesterday I spoke in the debate on Free School Meals and Remote Learning, which were part of an Opposition Day, where the Opposition choose the subjects to debate.

There is then a vote at the end of proceedings, but this is only a vote on a statement and does not change government policy or any laws or legislation.

This will normally be used by the Opposition to present emotive topics to create headlines. In my speech, as well as praising the work of our school staff and the support given for remote learning and Free School Meals, I made the point that Opposition Days are being used to misrepresent how Parliament works and how this had led to threats being made towards colleagues.
