Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced last week that he would be bringing a proposal to Parliament to phase in a ban on smoking. This could possibly mean that anyone born on or after 1 January 2009 would be banned from ever buying a cigarette in England. The vote in Parliament will be a free vote, meaning that MPs will be free to make up their own minds on which way to vote.
As your Member of Parliament, I would like to know your views on the possibility of creating a smoke-free generation in the UK. Do you agree with this, or do you feel this is too much government intervention in our private lives? This vote will have a profound impact upon our society, so I encourage you to take part so that it can inform my final decision.
